After 2 loooooooong weeks of anticipating November 29th, it finally came. SOLmates everywhere anxiously awaited results of our submission to Five Ultimate for a Growth Sponsorship and on November 29th those results were in. Myself and co-captain Heather went to practice with full knowledge that SOL had received this sponsorship, but decided it was best to wait for the right moment to let all the ladies of SOL know. This led to me having to lie and mumble something about East Coast being 2 hours behind so they probably wouldn't send emails till later. Of course everyone believe it because they had to. After hanging out with our homie Mr. T for a quick minute, the time was right. It seemed only right that Beef, who spent extensive hours converting the video to the right format ("Because Brit is an idiot and got the wrong type of camera" quote from Beef) and editing this masterpiece, would be the one to let everyone know we got it! After Beef read the email to all and we disclosed the awesome hookups we will be getting on gear, the cheering was rather loud. I would like to apologize to the Womens Basketball coach who was probably trying to do work in her office at this time so most likely disturbed by our shouts and tears of joy (ok, so the tears might be an exaggeration...).
And there you have it! SOL gets sponsored by Five. With that, we all know how extra hard we will be working to show all of the ultimate world what's up! If you or anyone you know is amazing at designing jersey's WE WANT YOU!!! Please contact me via email (gartnebm@uwec.edu) if you are interested in submitting any jersey designs for a fresh new SOL look! Sublimated or not, show us what you got! (that rhymes)

Uno, dos, tres, OLE!! Taco pizza, ON BUFFET!!!!
SOL hosted the women's college division during the Eau Claire Chillout this past weekend. Because of our amazing large numbers, we split into two squads to take on other the other women's teams. Saturday our ladies were up bright and early to set up the fields and get the games started. We had our kaBOOMbox charged and ready to pump us up.
On Saturday, SOL X played four games against Carleton, UW-Whitewater, Minnesota Duluth, and St. Ben's. SOL got their first look at former regional rival Carleton of the year. The game against UW Whitewater was a lot of fun. The Shist ladies are always up for a good game of ultimate. Minnesota Duluth was a little rough for SOL X, but our funtensity kicked in and we came away with a good win. St. Ben's had few subs but they still brought a lot of energy to the game. We gave them a good St. B-B-B-Benny and the Jets cheer! At the end of the day, the SOL X ladies had a record of 3-1. SOL Y played games against UW-Milwaukee, UW-Steven's Point, Minnesota, and Winona State. These ladies went 4-0.
On Sunday, SOL X started with a game against the Minnesota Ninjas. It was a challenging and fun game for both teams. We both brought a lot of intensity to try and win our way into the championship bracket. Minnesota held out for the win in the end. SOL X went on to play a good game with the Shist ladies, winning to land 5th place in the EC Chillout. SOL Y played Minnesota next. The game was similar to the previous round, but these SOL ladies pulled away with the win to go to the championship game against Carleton.
Mega SOL v. Carleton
Both SOL teams combined to form MEGA SOL for the game against Carleton. Carleton scored the first few points of the game. SOL soon responded with some sick D's and picked up points to follow and tie up the score. It was a Carleton score and SOL answer score game until Carleton pulled ahead at the half. SOL stepped up to play some sick ass defense, but Carleton got away with a win at the end. Mega SOL ended the day with 2nd place in the EC Chillout.

No Wisconsequences Twenty Ten
SOL traveled to Merton, WI for No Wisconsequences Twenty Ten last weekend. With a good mix of returners and newbies, it was a great weekend to learn each other's ultimate skills. SOL also got to meet their brand new KaBOOMbox. If you don't know what this is, just look for this amazing music producing box during our warm ups at a tournament near you! Our first night consisted of a giant bonfire, star gazing, and the viewing of a movie that inspired the line "Get that virgin!". We went to bed early due to an 8:30 am game time.

SOL v. UW-Milwaukee Black Cat
The final game of the day was against North Park's Allihopa. SOL won their final game of the day with a score of 13-3.
Saturday began a little slowly as we all woke up during our first game against UW-Milwaukee's Black Cat. The game was an exchange of points until the Black Cat women got away with two more points to win the game 9 over 7.
SOL v. Minnesota-Duluth Lake Effect
SOL's second game of the day was against Ohio Wesleyan Yeti. SOL started flowing and won the game 8-6. Our third game was against Duluth's Lake Effect. SOL took this one pretty quickly with a winning score of 13-1.
SOL v. North Park Allihopa
Tracie - Maniac Scorekeeper |
SOL attended the No Wisconsequences tournament party that night for some ultimate fun. Our very own alumna Martha Harris won a Patagonia item during the raffle! Kathleen and Samara impressed some break dancers by spinning each other in the middle of their large circle. The SOL ladies also graced the tournament attendees with their 1st place Centex Dance! After the raffle and a deer-filled drive home, we slept sweet ultimate dreams.
SOL v. Iowa State Women Scorned
On Sunday, our first game started at 10am so SOL was well rested and ready to go!
This was a competitive game for the SOL ladies with a few game changing calls mixed in. The final score was SOL 10 - Women Scorned 13.
SOL v. St. Olaf Durga
The second game that day was against St. Olaf Durga. This game was also more difficult, giving the SOL rookies a taste of what's in store for the spring.
SOL ended the weekend at 3-3. A few standout plays included both Emy and Meredith getting their first callahans! Megan caught the disc in on the sideline by doing the splits to keep one foot in. The rookies learned how to work an awesome shut down zone too!!
The ride home in Beef's car was quite entertaining. It consisted of a meeting with some frisbee boys at McDonald's, a mooning to keep up the streak started at Hucktoberfest, and over 100 total cows counted! SOL takes on I-94 like none other.

SOL's Fall 2010 Premiere at Hucktoberfest
SOL made its 2010 Fall premiere at Hucktoberfest this past weekend. With Traci's sick layout and Beef's first Callahan ever, SOL had an explosive start to the season. Our newbies were making sick cuts and a few were even handling!! SOL ended the tournament weekend at 4-3.
SOL has been working hard this week with practice and conditioning to prepare for No Wisconsequences!

Layout! Layout! Layout SOLmates Layout!!
Sol had its first layout practice of the season last week Thursday. We got those newbies to jump in every puddle on that field! Little did we know that very rain would flood the Chip...
Even our beloved captains got their, well, entire bodies dirty! By the end of practice everyone was smiling with the satisfaction of getting as muddy as possible. As we all know, the weather here is unpredictable, but SOL will always practice in no matter what Mother Nature throws at us!
8 days until Hucktoberfest, our first tournament of the season!

SOL's First Fall Practice
Hey Ladies!
The blog hasn't been updated in a while - but we have things to talk about now that the season has started up again!
Tonight's practice was awesome. We had 24 new ladies show up who were super excited about ultimate. Throwing was the lesson of the day and we had more throwing better flicks than us old folks did the first time :) Our three new captains did a bomb diggity job of planning practice and keeping the flow going. Returners showed some great leadership, helping our newbies with throwing and cutting.
Now starts the 1 month countdown to our first tournament, Hucktoberfest!
Coming soon: An introduction to the new/returning ladies of SOL for the 2010-2011 season!

Where in the world is SOL?!?
In the words of our beloved captain Brit Gartner, "Oh whassup!!".
Due to our lack of posting action, we've decided to bring you a
little sumthin' sumthin' about SOL's current summer endeavors.
The quick, cuddly, caring Pat Niles, a.k.a. Daddy Pat is
travelling abroad with the Chad Larson Experience to play
Worlds against some of the most prestigious ultimate
teams in the universe. After he finishes up with that, he will
return to play with Drag'n Thrust for summer tournaments and
the USA Ultimate fall series.
Three of our former SOLmates, hb city Anna Hettler, angry
elf Martha Harris, and with hams like Christmas dinner
Robyn Fennig are playing with Drag'nThrust. Joining them
is the magnificent, spectacular, fast, super awesome,
Melissa "George" Jordan!! The women on this team are going
to be ridiculous. If you ever feel overwhelming amounts of
heat at tournaments near you this summer,
it's main source is fire from the mouths of dragons thrusting.
The best roommate ever/pump up machine Brit Gartner, is playing
with Minnesota's POP women's team. She will be traveling with them
looking to kick ass and tool some hoes. In other words, they are
hoping to bring it at Nationals again this year.
Three newbies, insightful spunkalicious Emy, peppy uptight Beef,
and the angry hammer throwing Nottie (newly appointed nickname),
are playing with a new women's team in Minnesota sponsored by the
lovely Surly Brewing Company. In other words, if you want free beer,
these are the girls you want to find at tournaments this summer,
a.k.a. MUDI, Heavyweights, and Cooler Classic.
The jumpin' jivin' Jess "Holla" Haller, is playing with a
new mixed team called Hexxus. They are the new face of
ultimate pollution.
Toxic love, baby.
With bigger layouts than the state of Texas Heather,
space cadet/most improved Mariah, and resident expert
duck caller Tracie joined a new Eau Claire mixed team
that doesn't quite have a name yet. But watch out,
they've got some great SOL girls playing for them.
Our other SOL sisters are playing full time with summer
leagues in their area.
Just keep in mind, SOL's game against Carleton at Regionals
wasn't the end. Next year we're going to come out with
our guns blazin'.
Do work SOL.
BANGARANG RUFIO.

End of Season Wrap-Up
It is with great sadness that I begin my final posting to this blog as a member of SOL, however our 2009-2010 season has had much to celebrate. I thought about re-capping Regionals, but quite frankly, between graduation, papers, and what not, I really am pretty loaded with stuff to do...and besides, the McIntire Library is no place to get emotional during finals week. Even if I were to re-cap Regionals, what could I possibly say?
Our team four years ago was a whopping ten to eleven players. We have grown to be one of the most successful, brand spankin' new, small, public school teams in the country. (Most descriptive way to talk about our team since I can no longer claim that we are D-III, because, by UPA standards we do not meet those requirements)
When I joined SOL three and a half years ago, I had no idea what ultimate was. I was merely looking for something to fill the void that college softball left when my cartilage-free knees were simply too bad to continue to catch anymore. Looking for something to push me the way that softball had, I was torn between rugby and ultimate. My parents talked me out of rugby, saying it would not be a good factor into the knee equation. So ultimate it was.
It was a 6 am indoor practice with six girls. That’s what hooked me. Laying out for a disc on the tile floor of the McPhee gym was exhilarating. Failing miserably at throwing my first forehand throws, not so much.
Much hasn’t changed since then about my feelings towards the game (thankfully my forehand has…). The feeling that I get after completing a huck to my teammate who just layed out for the most ridiculous grab because I put it just a little too far to hit her in stride. Working to get that layout D to help pick up my teammate after a missed opportunity. The excitement of seeing my teammates succeed both on and off the field fills me with a sense of pride that only my teammates can understand.
I am so proud of what SOL has accomplished, not just as a team, but as a program. Working side by side with my teammates to help lay the foundation of a solid program has been one of the most challenging, yet rewarding experiences I have encountered in my brief 23-year life. I cannot wait to see what SOL achieves in the future. To look at SOL in the future and say that I was apart of that has made this whole thing worthwhile.
I have had the opportunity to meet some of the most wonderful individuals in my life through the game of ultimate. Luckily, I can continue to keep playing competitively, but it doesn't change the fact that this was the team that jump-started this passion for me.
So what can I say about Regionals? I have never seen our team so in sync as we were on Sunday. We played in one of the most exciting college womens games in Central Region history (I guess I can’t say that for sure…but that’s what I keep hearing from friends, and I honestly believe it). Looking to my left and to my right before pulling right after our team put together three consecutive breaks to tie the game at 10-10 against the team with one of the longest histories of nationals appearances in the game…I think that says it all.
Miss you SOL.<3 Robyn

Vote #44 Robyn Fennig for 2010 Callahan MVP
Since her sophomore year at UW-Eau Claire, Robyn has fully dedicated herself to the sport of ultimate. As both a captain and player for SOL, she has worked hard to help the team's goal of making it to nationals for the first time this year. Robyn's contribution to this team is marked by her tremendous leadership, motivation, and sick custom stencils. Not only that, but she's constantly laying out, making crazy grabs, and her skying skills do not discriminate. She puts her all into both the team and her time on the field. A Callahan MVP award would make her senior SOL exit a great close to an awesome run of college ultimate.

CENTEX Twenty-ten!
SOL packed up (all but one of) the vehicles and started the long drive down to Austin, TX on Thursday (the last vehicle left on Friday morning). We were looking to be full squad for the first time all year to kick off spring break....
Saturday Highlights
Pool Play Game 1 vs. Northeastern Valkyries
SOL started out strong, scoring a quick point on Northeastern. After allowing Northeastern to trade points, SOL Coach Pat Niles took a time out, to stress the importance of playing our game and not playing down. SOL came out of the time out on a rampage, finding open receivers and pushing the defensive intensity, taking half 8-3. Coming out of half, SOL controlled the tempo, finishing the game 15-7.
Pool Play Game 2 vs. Kansas Bettys
SOL has not seen the Bettys in a while. One of our favorite teams, the Bettys always bring a tough game. Wearing some bomb skirts, the Bettys challenged SOL early, scoring the first point easily. Pat called a time out and looked to start the game over. SOL received and never looked back. Taking half 8-2, and finishing strong 15-3.
Pool Play Game 3 vs. Penn State Isis
Tracie Anderson busted down the field on the pull to start the game off with a sick layout D, translating into a quick score. SOL broke again quickly, causing Isis to call a timeout. During the timeout, the SOL captains challenged their SOLmates to work on three things during the game: defensive intensity, handler movement, and offensive flow. The first point after the timeout, Heather Wroten had a sick layout D on a handler dump. Mariah Dorner and Melissa Brown had multiple layout intimi-D's, really pushing themselves to improve. SOL took half 8-4, and went on to win 15-8.
Crossover Game vs. UCLA BLU
After winning our pool, we went to take on UCLA. In our first matchup against BLU in our program's history, we came out fired up. Sick of being over looked, and under seeded, we decided to take it to this ultimate powerhouse out of the Southwest Region. UCLA's game plan was to play for field position in the intense cross-wind, looking to huck anything and everything. With Robyn Fennig deep to eat up everything that went up and Anna Hettler's fierce mark, UCLA's game plan proved unsuccessful. SOL ate through the UCLA zone on O. SOL's handler line, led by Martha Harris, Iansa Zaldarriaga, Whit Esson, and Beth Wright found the holes and moved the disc up field to our cutters. Anna Hettler and Robyn Fennig's precision hucks found Emy Marier, Moira Farrell, Brit Gartner, Melissa Brown and Melissa Jordan. UCLA tried to man several SOLmates, but SOL went too deep into their roster to really isolate any one player. SOL took half 8-4, and went on to win, 13-6.
CENTEX DANCEOFF!
SOL went first and set the bar with our high intensity difficult dance that we have been working on all semester long. We were apparently awarded some deductions for going over our alloted time and using Lady Gaga. We won, hoisting Martha Harris in the air. We did an encore and it was awes! Youc an check out the dance HERE!
Sunday Highlights
Pre-Quarters vs. Oregon Fugue
SOL came out all guns firing to do some damage vs. the only undefeated team in the nation. SOL started off on D, going down 0-1 off of a quick throw and score point. SOL received and put the next point in, with the score 1-1. SOL went on to get 4 consecutive break points, going up on Oregon 5-1. Oregon took a time out to recollect themselves after a virtually unheard of team was taking it to them and capitalizing on every turn Oregon had. SOL started believing with every break that we deserved to be there just as much as any of the "D-I" teams. Oregon came back on a run. The score was tied at 5-5. Pat called a timeout, emphasizing that just a few minutes ago, SOL had so much fire, intensity, and confidence. Poised, SOL came back to answer. Oregon and SOL traded points, however, Oregon took half 8-7. SOL fought hard, throughout the second half, joined on the sidelines with Women Scorned and Bella Donna cheering us on. Anna Hettler had a sick hand-block on the goal line, to be caught by a SOLmate for a bookends score. Hard cap was blown, and Oregon took the game. SOL 11, Fuegue 13.
11th place game vs. Carleton SyzygySOL's numbers started dwindling, and fatigue had officially set in. SOL was able to manufacture several breaks, but Syzygy worked the disc up field with their cutters, throwing unphased by the wind. SOL 5, Syzygy 10.
Pool Play Game 1 vs. Northeastern Valkyries
SOL started out strong, scoring a quick point on Northeastern. After allowing Northeastern to trade points, SOL Coach Pat Niles took a time out, to stress the importance of playing our game and not playing down. SOL kept the fire going strong coming out 5-0 on the defending national champs. UCSB came out in a relentless 4-man cup zone defense, catching the SOL handlers off guard. Though SOL was up for the entire game, UCSB manufactured breaks, taking advantage of turn-overs close to the endzone. Hardcap was blown, SOL came out on top, 10-9.
9th place Bracket semis vs. Colorado Kali
After sustainaing some injuries to several veteran players, SOL hit a wall of physical and mental fatigue vs. a fired up, skilled Kali team. Kali took control of the game early, and kept rolling. SOL 2, Kali 9.9th place Bracket semis vs. Colorado Kali
11th place game vs. Carleton Syzygy
Check out the end of season rankings: SOL is 17th in the nation going into the Series!! SOL is working hard and ready to roll. Alumni Weekend this weekend...SOL skills clinic in the AM. Chicago Invite 2010
Holy kittats. SOL is having a bad track records for the Spring 2010 season with playing in weather with ridiculously terrible weather conditions. For the second consecutive weekend, SOL bared some pretty terrible wind and rain/snow. This time, we added mud to the mix. We were able to get in one day of games, so here you go...for your reading pleasure.
SOL vs. North Park Allihopa
SOL came out working the disc well. The wind and low number of handlers during the weekend challenged some of our cutters to handle in some treacherous conditions. SOL primarily ran man-defense in this game, working on the fundamentals we discussed in practice, making adjustments to try some new things. SOL 8, Allihopa 4.
SOL vs. Central Michigan
The wind picked up and the temperatures dropped, as SOL took on an extremely athletic Central Michigan team. If the team had the disc skills to match their heart and hustle, the game would have been much closer. SOL 10, C. Mich 4.
SOL vs. Iowa Saucy Nancy
It was a match-up between the #4 and #5 seeded teams at Chicago Invite as SOL took on Saucy Nancy. SOL brought intensity against a hard working Saucy Nancy zone defense. SOL tried some new things defensively, switching up between man and zone. SOL and Saucy traded points until SOL took the first upwind break to take half. SOL came out of half to earn another break, enough to seal the SOL victory. SOL 8, Saucy 6.
SOL vs. Case Western Reserve Fighting Gobies
SOL matched up against the Fighting Gobies for the first time ever. Case Western had some great handlers who challenged the SOL zone. SOL was able to work the disc up to the upwind endzone several times, but was unable to finish it in the endzone. Case Western worked it upwind once, but was able to connect when it mattered, getting the break they needed to seal the fate of SOL. SOL 6, Case Western 8.
We are looking forward to Centex this weekend. We need some nice weather and the chance to play out full games...look for the hot pink, white, and black in Austin, TX. We are looking to improve on our tournament finish, as well as win the Centex Dance Competition!

Philly Classic Recap
SOL took its first ever team trip to the northeast to take on the teams of the Metro East and Northeast regions at Philly Classic. Due to the flood warnings and poor weather conditions, the tournament format was drastically changed. There would be no pool play, no bracket play, no way of actually declaring a "winner." Every team was guaranteed six games against opponents. Penn State and Messiah College were awesome enough to provide some ridiculously nice turf fields for the tournament. (Thanks for making the tourney happen!)
Saturday
Saturday's games where characterized by rain, wind, and cold. These conditions were tricky for a spring outdoor debut, but SOL did what we could with what we had.
Game 1 vs. Ottawa Lady Gee-Gees
Ottawa, led by 2009 Team Canada member Anne Mercier. the Lady Gee-Gees won the flip. SOL had to pull upwind. Both teams traded points in the downwind endzone. Neither team worked the disc more than half-way up the field upwind. One good thing coming out of this game was the efficiency that SOL had in downwind O. We only had one point where we turned it more than twice going downwind, allowing us to conserve energy. Final outcome: SOL 8, Lady Gee Gees 9.
During our bye, SOL took over a ridiculously small laundromat to dry our stuff. We stripped down and threw everything we had in the dryers. We diagrammed our plays with water bottles, ate some delicious food and talked plays. After some GPS mishaps, we found our way back, to the fields and threw the first seven SOL mates on the field.
Game 2 vs. Maryland Helpful Corn
After once again losing the flip, we were set to pull upwind in the rain. Maryland's team dynamic reminded me much of ours. They are a good spirited, fun team. Charlie Mercer is ridiculously skilled, and ridiculously nice. SOL worked it up field three times, but was unable to make it happen in the endzone. Down-wind we were able to connect finding SOLmates in the endzone. We traded points, final outcome: SOL 6, Helpful Corn 7.
Game 3 vs. Yale Romona
SOL won the flip, starting downwind on O. Once again, we traded points with Yale. Both teams opted to play zone D, challenging handlers on upwind plays in the difficult conditions. A Romona cutter hands-down had one of the sickest layout bids of the tournament. She unfortunately hurt herself. After a long injury time-out, universe point was played, SOL came out on top. (We hope that the Yale player heals fast so she can keep making sick plays!!) Final score: SOL 9, Yale 8.
Sunday
Conditions for Sunday's games were more bearable. The wind and rain was not as intense, but the cold still prevailed with sprinkles throughout the day. The turf was great.
Game 4 vs. Iowa State Women Scorned
Our favorite Central Region team, Women Scorned always brings a tough game. Lauren Theile was looking solid for Scorned, finding holes in the SOL zone. SOL switched it up between zone and man and seemed to control the offensive tempo. Final score: SOL 11, Women Scorned 5
Game 5 vs. North Carolina Pleiades
SOL came out flat in this game, lacking the intensity shown in the day's first game vs. ISU. After giving up 5 consecutive breaks, SOL got on the board and picked it up. Concentrating on playing shut down D, SOL traded points with UNC to half. After half, SOL worked it efficiently against the UNC man-defense in one quick, efficient possession, scoring the first break of the game. SOL finally looked alive, but the effort was too little, too late. Final Score: SOL 5, UNC 10
Game 6 vs. Cornell Thorny Roses
Coming off of a tough loss, SOL knew that we had to win. After allowing a Cornell break, SOL picked it up, scoring quickly and going on a huge run. The SOL zone was frustrating the Cornell handlers who opted to take the risk punting it deep to seemingly open receivers. SOL was able to capitalize on this strategy and control the tempo of the first half, taking half 8-1. SOL allowed the Cornell offense to score a few more points off of transitions, but all in all, never losing the tempo. Final Score: SOL 12, Cornell 5
We got back in the cars and drove 15+ hours back to Eau Cleazy, where we were informed by everyone and their moms that it was 60 degrees + and sunny all weekend. It's a good thing we drove super far for terrible weather. It was a sign from some upper power that going to Philly was an okay idea, some fraternity on campus was handing out free Monster energy drink today. It was as if they knew how badly we all needed it (by we all, I mean me, Brit, Martha, and Cole as we threw on campus mall today).
We're looking forward to Chicago Invite. This week, we are looking to start outdoor practice with the beautiful weather we are looking forward to. I plan to grab my homework and hit the books on the porch in about three minutes (as I finish my smelly laundry from the weekend)
On a side note, the SOL intramural bball team is looking to claim an intramural title tonight. Wish us luck as we attempt to take home the coveted shirts and glasses. Brit says tonight is going to fast-break city for her...I believe it. She's ready to go.
